January 23, 2001 WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The man who ran for the White House through the 2000 campaign season
promising to be "the
education president" gets his chance to make good on that pledge Tuesday when he transmits
his education overhaul legislative
package from the White House to both chambers of Congress.
"This is not a Republican issue, this is not a Democratic issue," Bush said Monday afternoon.
"It is not an independent issue, it is an
American issue. A fundamental American issue. I told the leadership that they should be expecting
a strong education reform
package, a tax relief package, a Medicare and Social Security reform package and a
package to pay members of the military
more money," he said.
